Less is More

It's a well-worn phrase -- "less is more." It stops some people in their tracks to sort out the meaning. In the case of Security Products magazine, we are experiencing the "more" part, though we're not offering any less.

As you have noticed, this month's magazine is a smaller size. I like it, and I hope you like it also. It's more manageable and easier to handle. In this case, less truly is more. I think our advertisers will like it more as well. For the most part, an advertisement on a page will dominate the space and illustrate a product, solution and branding message in a more clear and concise manner.

In other news, Security Products, just one of many magazines and products owned by our parent company, 1105 Media Inc., has moved. Our new location is only blocks away from our former offices—but wow, what a change company ownership has made. Once again, less office space means a greater opportunity to work closer as a team in the exchange of ideas and concepts. Our new address is 14901 Quorum Dr., Suite 425, Dallas, Texas, 75254. Our phone numbers remain the same. Because you are our loyal and well-respected readers, I wanted to mention a few things you can expect with the new change in magazine appearance. Other than the size of the magazine, our talented art director, Dale Chinn, is making a few cosmetic changes. We expect Dale will bring the graphic look of the magazine headlong into the 21st century.

We know for certain that technology has been key to change in the security industry. And it is for the publishing medium as well. As a staff, we feel the changes were necessary to serve our readership in a more efficient manner.

Inside the pages of Security Products magazine, you'll find more new products, special sections and technical information in this format. Megan Weadock, my managing editor, and I will continue our focus on the industry. Industry experts have signed on to contribute opinions on market trends, product opinions and installation tips. We also understand the need to converge technologies, and that's why we're introducing a Software Security column each month.

As a big reader myself, I like articles that are concise and to the point. You'll find that we are doing the same thing with case studies that will be part of our Highlight and Spotlight pages. Integrators will share their experiences on a product application and its impact. In this month's issue, our Network-Centric Security publication also is included. In May we will focus on the monitoring industry.

Speaking of Network-Centric Security and the supplement we produce, our editor is Steve Titch. He is well-qualified to address this marketplace not only because of firsthand experience, he's also an excellent journalist who knows where to get the stories and whom to contact for interviews. This supplement is published six times a year.

Because we're involved in an industry that seems to be growing, even in the midst of a declining overall marketplace, our staff is preparing more longer articles that we call features. Every month we will focus on timely topics with an in-depth feature on products, solutions and how-to information for the security end user and supplier.

We also want to explore the ins and outs of homeland security, and we understand this is a top priority. An emphasis on this topic has national significance, and we believe that protecting the nation's infrastructure is critical. Some of our topics will include utilities, ports, airports and our borders.

Security Products magazine will still be a tabloid publication. We've changed the size once before, and it was a good decision then. Our change this time is a great decision. We will still remain the largest circulated security publication in the United States, with more than 70,000 subscribers receiving it each month. We promise to continue bringing you all the security trends and new product information you need in one comprehensive magazine.
